The Rocks Beneath the
Caribbean of the Rockies

Bear Lake's impossible turquoise water is a clue to the geology hiding around it — limestone caves stuffed with 330-million-year-old coral, red jasper canyons, phosphate beds, and one of the strangest fossil beaches on Earth. Here's what to look for, and where.

Why is the water turquoise?

Springs feeding Bear Lake pass through limestone bedrock, loading the water with dissolved and suspended calcium carbonate. Sunlight scatters off those tiny particles the same way it scatters off air molecules in the sky — the blue wavelengths bounce around and win. It's the lake wearing its own bedrock as a color.

Why so many fossils?

Idaho's fold-and-thrust belt stacked up hundreds of millions of years of ancient seafloor along the Bear River Range. Every canyon wall is a page from a different ocean — Cambrian, Mississippian, Triassic — pushed up and tilted for you to read.

Why phosphate?

Southeastern Idaho sits on one of the largest phosphate deposits in North America, the Permian-age Phosphoria Formation. It's mined seriously nearby — but float pieces and outcrops around the valley show you the same rock for free.

Limestone & Dolomite

Look for: pale gray to buff, fine-grained rock, often riddled with cavities, veins of white calcite, or fossil fragments. Fizzes with a drop of vinegar — that's the calcium carbonate.

Found at: nearly every road cut and canyon wall in the Bear River Range; it's the same rock dissolving into Bear Lake's water right now.

Minnetonka Cave Corals

Mississippian seafloor, ~330 my

Minnetonka Cave Corals

Look for: horn coral, honeycomb coral, brachiopods, bryozoans, and crinoid stem segments embedded right in the cave's limestone walls and ceiling — remnants of a warm tropical sea that once covered this spot.

Found at: Minnetonka Cave, St. Charles Canyon, Caribou-Targhee National Forest. It's a guided show cave — view and photograph only, no collecting inside. Similar fossiliferous limestone shows up in nearby canyon outcrops.

The Paris Biota

Triassic ocean rebound, ~249 my

The Paris Biota

What it is: a scientifically famous fossil bed in the shales west of Paris, Idaho, describing life just a few million years after the worst mass extinction in Earth's history. Ammonoids and bivalves dominate, alongside an early squid relative named Idahoteuthis in its honor.

Found at: Paris Canyon shale exposures. This is an active research locality — admire the story, but leave excavation to paleontologists and check current access before hiking in.

Red Jasper & Malachite

Red Jasper & Malachite

Look for: deep brick-red jasper, sometimes banded or shot through with streaks of green malachite where copper mineralization crept in. Takes a good polish.

Found at: old mineral workings in the canyons west of Montpelier and Paris, including the historic Hummingbird Mine area. Much of this ground sits on private or claimed land — get permission before collecting.

Phosphate Rock

Phosphoria Formation, ~270 my

Phosphate Rock

Look for: dark brown to black, dense, and noticeably heavier than ordinary shale — sometimes pellet-textured, sometimes with a faint oily sheen. It's the raw material of fertilizer.

Found at: outcrops on the northeastern side of the Bear Lake valley and throughout the "Phosphate Patch" of southeastern Idaho. Active mine properties are strictly off-limits — stick to open outcrops and float.

Quartzite

Ridgelines of the Bear River Range

Quartzite

Look for: sugary, glassy-textured rock in white, pink, or rust — old beach and river sandstone, metamorphosed hard enough to ring when you tap two pieces together.

Found at: ridge-forming outcrops throughout the high country flanking the valley; loose talus below cliff faces is the easiest hunting.

Cambrian Shale Fossils

Trilobites & brachiopods, ~500 my

Cambrian Shale Fossils

Look for: thin, dark, easily-split shale that opens along bedding planes to reveal trilobites, brachiopods, and echinoderms from some of the earliest complex animal life on the planet.

Found at: Cambrian shale belts around Georgetown Canyon and the Bear River Range near Liberty. Many outcrops are studied research sites — treat fossil-bearing shale gently and confirm access first.

Where to Look

Bear Lake straddles the Idaho–Utah line in a valley carved by faulting, ringed by canyons that each expose a different slice of time.

Minnetonka Cave & St. Charles Canyon

Idaho's largest limestone show cave, on the lake's north end in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Guided summer tours pass walls full of Mississippian coral and crinoids. No collecting inside the cave — but the canyon's roadside limestone makes for good float-rock hunting.

Paris Canyon

West of the town of Paris. Home to both the historic Hummingbird Mine workings (red jasper, malachite) and the Paris biota Triassic fossil shales. Mixed private and public ground — verify ownership and get permission before you dig.

Georgetown Canyon & the Bear River Range

Cambrian shale exposures northwest of the valley hold trilobites and brachiopods among some of the oldest fossiliferous rock in the region. Quartzite talus lines the high ridges above.

Bear Lake's Northeastern Shore

Outcrops of the Phosphoria Formation show up along the valley's northeast side — the same rock unit mined for phosphate across southeastern Idaho. Stay off active mine leases; open outcrops are fair game.

Rules & Rockhounding Ethics

Know who owns the ground

Casual collecting of common rock, mineral, and petrified-wood samples for personal use is generally allowed on Caribou-Targhee National Forest and BLM land in reasonable quantities. Private land, active mining claims, and show caves (like Minnetonka Cave itself) are a hard no without explicit permission.

Vertebrate fossils are protected

Vertebrate fossils and significant scientific sites, like the Paris biota beds, are protected under federal and state law regardless of land ownership. Photograph and enjoy — don't excavate.

Check current regulations

Rules change. Confirm current access with the Idaho Department of Lands and the Caribou-Targhee National Forest ranger district before heading out, especially for anything beyond casual surface collecting.

Go May through September

Bear Lake Valley sits above 5,900 feet. Canyon roads and cave tours typically run from early May through September, snow permitting.

Leave no trace

Fill in holes, avoid heavy equipment without a permit, pack out what you bring in, and take only what you'll actually use — the next rockhound is counting on it too.
